This is a six week course for Grades K-2 that is tied to our plant and soil kits, called Grow Kits! Students are given soil, pots, seeds, a journal, pencils and other materials to plant, observe and grow!

We’ve designed this project so that students can use kits in different learning modes from the classroom to at home. Each week, we have a specific activity tied directly to the learning kit.

The lessons below can be used by the teachers to support the program.

Week 1 Kit Introduction and Activity Video (Grades K-2)

In this video, we’ll look at the contents of our kit, set up for planting and plant our seeds.

Week 2 Kit Plant Life Cycle (Grades K-2)

In this video, we observe the seeds we planted and learn about the plant life cycle.

Week 3 Kit Plant Parts (Grades K-2)

In this video, we’ll observe our sprouts and learn about the parts of a plant.

Week 4 Kit Photosynthesis (Grades K-2)

In this video, we’ll observe our seedlings and learn about the important role of the leaves (photosynthesis).

Week 5 Kit Compost (Grades K-2)

In this video, we’ll observe our plants and learn how to make compost.

Week 6 Kit Project Closing (Grades K-2)

This is our last week of the Garden Kit project! In this video, we complete our plant and compost observations and learn a little about pollination.

After the Kit Project: Transplant & Harvest

Now that the Grow Kit project is over, what do you do with the plant or two that you kept? Watch this video to learn how to transplant and harvest from your plants!

What Is Soil? (K-2)

Healthy soil is essential for the survival of plants. Soil is composed of four main “ingredients”: minerals, water, air and organic matter.

Plant Life Cycle (K-2)

Most plants have 6 stages or parts to their life cycle. They start as a seed; the seed sprouts,; the plant grows and develops; reaches maturity and creates flowers; then it reproduces, where it creates fruits and seeds; and finally, the plant dies.

Plant Parts (K-2)

Plants all have the same main parts. Weʻll learn what those are and purpose for each.

Photosynthesis (K-2)

Understand that, using sunlight, water and air, plants are able to make their own food using energy from the sun.

Compost (K-2)

Compost is our natural recycling system. Decomposers are essential for breaking down large organic matter in our soil.

Soil Food Web (K-2)

In this lesson weʻll learn to identify the various roles of organisms within the food web and gain an understanding of how energy chains function in our soil.

Pollination (K-2)

Learn how plants and animals need the process of pollination to survive.

Butterfly Life Cycle

Watch the process of metamorphosis take place as a fritillary butterfly goes through its life cycle. This video was originally made for grades K-2, but watching the process of metamorphosis is amazing at any age!
