Grow Some Seeds

Kumu Mea Kanu

About Kumu Mea Kanu

Born in the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kumu Mea Kanu Kit project emerged as a grassroots solution to support Maui’s keiki during school closures. With children sent home and many lacking access to gardens, Grow Some Good launched this initiative to bring the joy and knowledge of gardening directly to families. Initially, the project delivered seeds, soil, and supplies to homes alongside online instructional videos, empowering kids to grow their own food while fostering a connection to the ʻāina.

Today, the Kumu Mea Kanu Kit has blossomed into a vital resource for classrooms across Maui. Teachers now receive comprehensive kits—complete with seeds, soil, supplies, and tailored lesson plans—to integrate hands-on gardening into their curricula. Students nurture their plants from seed to sprout, learning the value of sustainable food production and cultural stewardship. Once the plants are ready, keiki have the choice to bring their harvests home to their ʻohana or donate them to local farms, strengthening community ties and supporting Maui’s food system.
