Our story began in 2008 with a simple idea: school gardens could be powerful outdoor classrooms. A small group of community members, working as South Maui Sustainability’s School Garden Committee, believed that getting kids’ hands in the soil could plant the seeds for a healthier future for Maui.
From Three Garden Beds to a County-Wide Movement
We started with just three raised beds at Kihei Elementary, Lokelani Intermediate, and Kamali’i Elementary. The goal was to connect students—our keiki—to their food source and teach them about nutrition, sustainability, and the environment in a hands-on way.
The idea quickly took root. As more schools asked for help, we knew we’d found something special. In 2012, we became Grow Some Good to better reflect our growing mission to serve communities across the island.
Rooted in Partnership
Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We are grateful for our partnerships with the County of Maui, the Maui Family YMCA, the Hawaiʻi Farm to School Network, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, and the Hawaiʻi Department of Education, who share our vision. With their help and the dedication of countless volunteers, we continue to expand our programs and deepen our roots in the community.
